Build a New Things Arc Reactor
An arc reactor is simply an encapsulation of your values, inspired by the technology that powers Iron Man. This exercise will help you avoid new things that may divert you from your values.
Step 1: Think
Start by merely thinking about your values. You can do this by meditating on the question, what do I value in life? Another approach is to get out of your head and imagine you’re a scientist observing your life. Do whatever works for you. If you need inspiration, here are sample values from James Clear, Brené Brown, and Nir Eyal.
Step 2: Define
Once you’ve had a chance to think about your values, you’ll want to write them down. Don’t overthink it. On a piece of paper or in a document on your computer (or in the worksheet provided below), write down two or three values. These can be broad values, like authenticity and religion. Under each of your high-level values, write a brief explanation for why it’s important to you. Then include a couple of questions you can return to as a gut check for whether you’re sticking to them. These steps are meant to identify your values but also unpack the details of them.
Step 3: Apply
As you go about your day and encounter new things, think about what you’re doing and how it does or doesn’t align with your values. If you feel an urge to get a new thing, check with your values.
